SavaJe hosted JavaOne's "Device of the Show" in 2006, which is a CDC-based cell phone capable of hosting Java Swing and Java 2D based applications. Java, whether you love it, or hate it, it's here to stay. Like everyone's favorite language C, Java has had a major impact on the computing scene. When the history of computers is written, its name will be up there with the stars.

If you were to choose just one language to learn today, it should be Java. It's being pushed aggressively by Sun and is growing by leaps and bounds. There are lots of Java programmers out there and more join the party every day.

Java started out as a bit of an accident. A team under Bill Joy was working at Sun on a new programming language for embedded applications. Java was originally expected to work in toasters and fridges, not on modern computers! The initial prognosis for Java was not good and it was only the rise of the Internet which saved Java from oblivion. Since then, neither the Net nor Sun nor Java has looked back and all have grown from strength to strength.

In this book, we start off assuming that you know no programming language at all. We've focussed on the place where Java is most prevalent, the server. We're going to be teaching you Java one concept at a time and taking things real slow and easy. We believe that the best way to learn is to try and absorb just one concept at a time. We're here to help you learn, not to overwhelm you.

We like the concept of freedom, especially when it comes to information. We've occasionally picked up ideas for our examples from programs we've found online or in the product documentation. We've got information from so many sources, we can't credit them all, but we are grateful to them. In turn, we'd like you to use the code you'll find within in any way you wish.

Thinking in Java

In all ways—creating the programs, working in teams to create the programs, building user interfaces so the programs can communicate with the user, running the programs on different types of machines, and easily writing programs that communicate across the Internet—Java increases the communication bandwidth between people. I think that the results of the communication revolution may not be seen from the effects of moving large quantities of bits around; we shall see the true revolution because we will all be able to talk to each other more easily: one-on-one, but also in groups and, as a planet. I've heard it suggested that the next revolution is the formation of a kind of global mind that results from enough people and enough interconnectedness. Java may or may not be the tool that foments that revolution, but at least the possibility has made me feel like I'm doing something meaningful by attempting to teach the language.

AJAX in Action

Like everyone else, I was amazed when I saw some rich client applications like Google Maps and Google Suggest. I wondered how could you do that. Well, the secret is now out, AJAX. After spending some time learning what AJAX is all about. Here is real working example of AJAX for a perfect scenario and how we are using it in JavaRSS.com.

What is AJAX: AJAX is an architecture and not a technology. AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript And XML.

Punch Line: Lazy loading.

Problem: When JavaRSS.com homepage loads, it loads the description of all the items (if you have it enabled in settings). The description is not visible until you hover the mouse over the item.

The problem is that the user may not hover the mouseover every item on every channel. So pre loading all description is not good.

Solution: Using AJAX, the item description is loaded dynamically from the server only on mouseover.

This will reduce the initial page load size by more than half, there by loading the page faster for a better user experience.
