Along with the rise of Java has come the idea of network computing. This redbook looks at these two major forces by positioning network computing within the enterprise and showing how Java can be used to build sophisticated applications in the network computing arena. Using a scenario centered around the Lunar Medical Center, this redbook shows how to design and develop Java-based applications, applets and complete systems and highlights many of the related issues and alternatives that must be examined before an organization can feel "safe" with the new technologies. Developing applications with Version 1.0 of IBM's versatile VisualAge for Java Integrated Development Environment is the focus of this redbook. It will help you install, tailor and configure the new IBM Network Station 1000 to run Java-based applications and applets and show you how to work with the new Lotus eSuite Java-based application on the Network Station.

Download

Java 3D API Tutorial

Java 3D API Tutorial

The Java 3D API is a hierarchy of JavaTM classes which serve as the interface to a sophisticated three-dimensional graphics and sound rendering system. Java 3D provides high-level constructs to create and manipulate 3D geometry, and to build the structures used to render that geometry. Using this API, developers can efficiently create precise virtual universes in a wide variety of sizes, from astronomical to subatomic.

Despite all of this functionality, the API is straightforward to use. The details of rendering are handled automatically. By taking advantage of Java threads, the Java 3D renderer is capable of rendering in parallel. The renderer can also automatically optimize for improved rendering performance.

This tutorial introduces the main concepts of the Java 3D API, including many code samples, examples, and diagrams. It walks through how to use the Java® 2 Platform software to create and run three common types of programs written for the Java platform—applications, applets, and servlets.

You will learn how applications, applets, and servlets are similar and different, how to build a basic user interface that handles simple end user input, how to read data from and write data to files and databases, and how to send and receive data over the network. This tutorial is not comprehensive, but instead takes you on a straight and uncomplicated path through the more common programming features available in the Java platform.

Download

Mastering Enterprise Java Beans Third Edition

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/__YCBSbeuat4/SF0pTwpStJI/AAAAAAAAB2s/TESblMjvFSc/s320/mjb.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5214369363017249938" />

Mastering Enterprise Java Beans Third Edition

Published in January, 2005, the best selling book Mastering EJB is now in it's third edition and has been updated for EJB2.1 and also features new chapters on security and web services integration. SavaJe hosted JavaOne's "Device of the Show" in 2006, which is a CDC-based cell phone capable of hosting Java Swing and Java 2D based applications. In this interview learn more about JSR 209, the Advanced Graphics and User Interface Optional Package for the J2ME Platform; the device of the show itself, the GSPDA Jasper; and the development environment and technology stack that SavaJe has built to facilitate developing, testing, and deploying applications to this device.

Elsewhere on Informit, we have an article by Marcus Zarra entitled, Controlling Both Ends of the Communications Channel: From Cocoa to Servlets. In this continuing series, Marcus explores the difference between developing Java applications and Objective-C applications on Macintosh, and this week turns his attentions to integrating the two technologies.

As JavaOne winds down, we're only a week away from JBoss World 2006 in Las Vegas. I am honored to be presenting a lecture on performance tuning at JBoss World, but I am also very excited to attend this year as it will be very memorable in light of the recent Red Hat acquisition of JBoss. Matthew Szulik, the CEO and President of Red Hat, is scheduled to speak, in addition to a cast of very talented individuals. Like everyone's favorite language C, Java has had a major impact on the computing scene. When the history of computers is written, its name will be up there with the stars.

If you were to choose just one language to learn today, it should be Java. It's being pushed aggressively by Sun and is growing by leaps and bounds. There are lots of Java programmers out there and more join the party every day.

Java started out as a bit of an accident. A team under Bill Joy was working at Sun on a new programming language for embedded applications. Java was originally expected to work in toasters and fridges, not on modern computers! The initial prognosis for Java was not good and it was only the rise of the Internet which saved Java from oblivion. Since then, neither the Net nor Sun nor Java has looked back and all have grown from strength to strength.

In this book, we start off assuming that you know no programming language at all. We've focussed on the place where Java is most prevalent, the server. We're going to be teaching you Java one concept at a time and taking things real slow and easy. We believe that the best way to learn is to try and absorb just one concept at a time. We're here to help you learn, not to overwhelm you.

We like the concept of freedom, especially when it comes to information. We've occasionally picked up ideas for our examples from programs we've found online or in the product documentation. We've got information from so many sources, we can't credit them all, but we are grateful to them. In turn, we'd like you to use the code you'll find within in any way you wish.

Happy Learning!!!!

Read More

Thinking in Java

Thinking in Java

In all ways—creating the programs, working in teams to create the programs, building user interfaces so the programs can communicate with the user, running the programs on different types of machines, and easily writing programs that communicate across the Internet—Java increases the communication bandwidth between people. I think that the results of the communication revolution may not be seen from the effects of moving large quantities of bits around; we shall see the true revolution because we will all be able to talk to each other more easily: one-on-one, but also in groups and, as a planet. I've heard it suggested that the next revolution is the formation of a kind of global mind that results from enough people and enough interconnectedness. Java may or may not be the tool that foments that revolution, but at least the possibility has made me feel like I'm doing something meaningful by attempting to teach the language.

Download

Ajax in action

AJAX in Action

Like everyone else, I was amazed when I saw some rich client applications like Google Maps and Google Suggest. I wondered how could you do that. Well, the secret is now out, AJAX. After spending some time learning what AJAX is all about. Here is real working example of AJAX for a perfect scenario and how we are using it in JavaRSS.com.

What is AJAX: AJAX is an architecture and not a technology. AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript And XML.

Punch Line: Lazy loading.

Problem: When JavaRSS.com homepage loads, it loads the description of all the items (if you have it enabled in settings). The description is not visible until you hover the mouse over the item.

The problem is that the user may not hover the mouseover every item on every channel. So pre loading all description is not good.

Solution: Using AJAX, the item description is loaded dynamically from the server only on mouseover.

This will reduce the initial page load size by more than half, there by loading the page faster for a better user experience.

AJAX in Action ebook

Read More

Java Swing

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/__YCBSbeuat4/SF0m3TDZuYI/AAAAAAAAB2k/UXmx-1bF-6E/s320/jswing.s.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5214366675014105474" />
"Java Swing" description
The Swing classes eliminate Java's biggest weakness: its relatively primitive user interface toolkit. Java Swing helps you to take full advantage of the Swing classes, providing detailed descriptions of every class and interface in the key Swing packages. It shows you how to use all of the new components, allowing you to build state-of-the-art user interfaces and giving you the context you need to understand what you're doing. It's more than documentation; Java Swing helps you develop code quickly and effectively.

"Java Examples" Examples

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/__YCBSbeuat4/SF0mJ-mgSfI/AAAAAAAAB2c/0pxyZqrjFHk/s320/javaswing.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5214365896430078450" />
Java Swing

has something for all Java audiences, but is mainly intended for experienced and advanced GUI developers. Each chapter begins with a discussion of relevant classes and interfaces, often interspersed with small example applications to demonstrate key features. The remainder is then devoted to extensive, real-world examples that are explained thoroughly and are often built on top of one another. These examples are the main thrust of this book and make up most of its content.

Each Swing component is covered in depth with several accompanying examples. The authors have also identified five areas of Swing that deserve significantly more attention than others due to their size and complexity: the text package, the tree package, the table package, MDI environments, and pluggable look and feel. Thus, you will find the examples of this material particularly extensive. Additionaly, the authors have included chapters on five special topics: Java2D, Printing, Accessibility, JavaHelp, and CORBA -- all in terms of Swing.

Download
